How to resize a photo for passport, exam and job forms

Exact pixel and KB limits are the number one reason a form upload fails. Here is how to meet them.

Know the two limits

Forms ask for dimensions (for example 200 x 230 pixels) and a file size (for example 20 to 50 KB). You need to meet both.

Steps

  • Crop the photo to the right shape first.
  • Resize to the exact pixel size the form asks for.
  • Compress until the size is inside the range. Go in small steps so the face stays clear.
  • Save as JPG unless the form says otherwise.
