How to make a rent receipt for HRA claims (format, PAN rule and a free generator)
What a valid rent receipt must contain, when you need the landlord's PAN and how to make 12 monthly receipts at once.
Why you need rent receipts
If you get House Rent Allowance (HRA) in your salary and pay rent, your employer may ask for rent receipts before they allow the exemption. They are normally collected once or twice a year during investment proof submission.
What a rent receipt should show
- Tenant name and landlord name
- Full address of the rented property
- Rent amount, in numbers and in words
- The month or period the rent is for
- Date of payment and mode of payment
- Landlord's signature, and a revenue stamp if paid in cash above Rs 5,000
The PAN rule
If the rent you pay is more than Rs 1 lakh in a year (about Rs 8,333 a month), you must give your employer the landlord's PAN. If the landlord has no PAN, a signed declaration is usually accepted. Check your company's policy.
Make all receipts in one go
- Open the Rent Receipt Generator.
- Enter the tenant, landlord, address and monthly rent.
- Choose the first month and how many months you need, up to 12.
- Download the PDF, print it and ask the landlord to sign each receipt.
Important
Make receipts only for rent you really paid. Fake receipts can lead to tax penalties. Pay rent through bank transfer or UPI when you can, because a bank record is the best proof.
